Lawn Aeration

What is lawn aeration in Cedar City?

Aeration is a word that means, “to expose to the action or effect of air or to cause air to circulate through”. Aeration can describe the process of air being transferred from the lungs to the blood. Just as humans need air so does your lawn. The two biggest components of air are nitrogen (about 78%) and oxygen (about 21%), both of which are needed for thick and healthy grass. Lawn aeration in Iron County is simply removing small “plugs” of soil in a grass area to allow the roots a greater uptake of air, water, and nutrients. Although grass is a naturally occurring plant, it is not found in nature the way that we grow it in our yards in Cedar City. In nature, grass grows in loose patches and the roots have plenty of room to spread. When we grow grass in lawns, the roots have very little room to spread. Aeration helps thin out roots and encourages deep root growth rather than shallow growth. Aerations were first performed on high-profile grass areas such as the grass tennis courts at Wimbledon and other professional athletic fields and golf courses. Your lawn in Cedar City will look better and use less water if it is aerated annually.

How is lawn aeration done?

Are there different methods of Cedar City lawn aeration?

There are different methods for performing a lawn aeration. One method uses spikes that can be worn under shoes, done by hand, or a few rare machines use this technique. This method is not effective and does more harm than good. Part of the purpose of a lawn aeration service is to loosen up compacted soil and give the roots room to grow. Although a spike my open a hole, it increases the soil compaction around the hole and inhibits water, air, and nutrient absorption. The best, and most common, type of aeration is known as “core aeration” where an entire core, or plug as it is often called, is removed from the soil. These plugs are left on the grass and over the course of a few weeks break down and disappear. These do not cause little mounds in the grass. If you feel little mounds in your grass that is a sign of worms and has nothing to do with lawn aeration. An aerator, the name of the machine that pulls out the plugs, looks like a large lawn mower and is pushed back and forth across a lawn removing plugs. (These can be larger and pulled behind tractors for larger lawns or fields.) For a quality lawn aeration plugs should be at least 2 inches long and there should be at least 10 plugs pulled per square foot of lawn. In our Cedar City lawn aerations, we make sure to at least hit these minimums but generally pull 2.5” plugs at about 12 plugs per square foot. Not all Enoch lawn aeration services are created equal so if you care about your lawn make sure you know what kind of service you are paying for. You will also want to be sure whoever is performing your lawn aeration service is insured, so that were something to happen you are not liable.

How often should my lawn be aerated?

Not all lawn aeration services are created equal. It all depends on how nice of a lawn you would like to have. We like to compare it with going to see the dentist. Twice a year, in spring and fall, is required if you want to have an immaculate lawn that doesn’t require excessive water or fertilizer to maintain. If you skip a visit to the dentist will you die? Most likely not, and neither will you lawn, but just as teeth that aren’t cleaned and checked regularly are more suseptable to cavities and other issues, so are lawns that aren’t aerated more suseptable to soil compaction, lawn weeds like dandelions, and water being lost due to run off. If you want to dig into the financials aerating twice a year is easier and less expensive than fertilizing more frequently and paying higher water bills to try and compensate. Especially with us, all you need to do is give us a little info and you won’t ever have to worry about scheduling a lawn aeration again. Soils with a high content of clay (Cedar City soils have high clay content), slopes, and/or heavy foot or pet traffic will benefit greatly from aeration. Don’t expect unrealistic miracles. Lawns planted in poor soil, that lack nutrients and proper watering will not look like a PGA golf course after one aeration. Over time lawn aeration will be able to go longer between waterings without showing signs of wilt, the will green up faster and stay green longer as well as be much more tolerant to heat and drought.

When should my lawn be aerated?

Due to climate lawn aerations in Cedar City and Enoch are best for lawn your lawn twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. The key piece to keep in mind is that aeration stresses a lawn, hence the best time for lawn aeration in Enoch Utah is when the grass is under the least amount of stress. This will be in the spring when growth is begining, water is generally plentiful and there isn’t any heat stress. Fall lawn aerations in Cedar City should occur once the summer heat has past and with enough time to allow the lawn to recover before colder winter temperatures approach and the grass grows dormant. A spring dethatching service will not only help to break up the dirt plugs on your lawn, but will also remove some thatch allowing for even more air, water, and nutrients to reach your lawn’s roots. When followed by a good fertilizer application your lawn will not only green up fast, but will be prepared to be thick and healthy all year long.

Why is lawn aeration needed in Cedar City & Enoch?

Lawn aeration can be included in our regular Cedar City yard maintenance programs for FREE!

Cedar City is a high desert that gets very hot and dry in the summer with cold snow packed winters. These extremes are very hard on lawn grass which is only a mildly hearty plant. Cedar City lawns are generally compsoed of a mixture of 10-15 breeds of cool season grasses from the bluegrass, rye, and fescue families. Areas shaded during the winter often have snow on the lawn for multiple months at a time. This is stressful on a lawn and not only does it look like it was trampled come spring but the roots suffer in the same manner. Aearion will loosen up the soil allowing the roots to recover and go deeper. Cedar City lawn aerations also break up soil compaction and allow water to penetrate to the roots and not just pool on the surface of the lawn. When pooling occurs there are areas getting too much water and areas not getting enough water.

Why Do Golf Courses Aerate So Much?

The word aeration stimulates negative emotions for many golfers. It may come as a surprise, but golf course superintendents also dislike aeration. After all, the last person who wants to disrupt the smoothness of the putting greens they work so hard to maintain is the superintendent.
